Frequently asked questions

  • By track record, Kraken and Coinbase top the list — neither has lost user funds in a hack. That said, the safest place for crypto you don't actively trade is your own non-custodial wallet (see our Wallets comparison).
  • Among the majors, OKX (0.08–0.10%) and Binance (0.10%) are typically cheapest for spot trades. Both offer further discounts based on volume or holding their native token. Coinbase is roughly 4–6× more expensive on the basic interface.
  • Not the global platform. US residents must use Binance.US, which is a separate entity with fewer coins and slightly different fee tiers. KuCoin, OKX, and Bybit also restrict US users.
  • For small amounts you actively trade, yes. For significant savings, no — exchanges can fail (Mt. Gox, FTX, Celsius). The 'not your keys, not your coins' rule still applies. Move long-term holdings to a hardware wallet.
  • All six exchanges let you start with $5–$10 in most markets. There are no account-balance minimums. Some altcoins have minimum order sizes (e.g. 0.0001 BTC) — these are enforced at the trading-pair level.
  • Spot trading buys the actual coin. Derivatives (futures, perpetuals, options) are contracts that track the price without you owning the asset, often with leverage. Bybit specializes in derivatives; the other five focus more on spot.
  • Yes, on every exchange listed — though processing times and fees vary. Coinbase and Kraken offer the fastest USD/EUR/GBP wires. Some smaller fiat currencies (PKR, INR, AED) may only be supported via P2P trading.
  • On every regulated exchange, yes. You'll need to upload an ID and a selfie to lift withdrawal limits. The KYC process takes 5 minutes to a few hours depending on the platform.
  • Some are. We may earn a referral commission if you sign up after clicking. This never changes our editorial ratings — we maintain the same methodology for partners and non-partners.
  • Quarterly. Rates, supported coins, and ratings reflect the most recent quarterly review (Q2 2026). We update mid-quarter only when a major event (hack, regulatory action, acquisition) materially changes the picture.
